There’s nothing more relaxing than a leisurely shower – except, of course, when you feel the water start pooling up around your ankles due to a drain clog. A clogged shower drain can be an annoyance, but if it’s paired with a leak, it also has the potential to cause water damage to your West Hills, California area home. If you’re dealing with a clog, here are 5 of the most effective secrets plumbers have found to help remedy the situation:

1. Clear the clog manually.

If you can see the clog down your open drain, or can see it once you remove the drain cover, your best bet is to pull it out with your fingers. Those prone to squeamishness can grab a pair of dishwashing gloves to make the job easier to stomach, but most people prefer to use the next suggestion.

2. Use a hook to clear the drain.

This could be as simple as a bent wire coat hanger, but it will do the trick as long as the clog is mostly free-floating. If, however, you have shower users with long hair, the clog is likely tangled around parts of the drain and considerably harder to remove. If a hook doesn’t seem to be working, move on to the next step.

3. Try a “snake” on the clog.

Snakes are special plumbing tools that act as a sort of corkscrew, sliding down into the drain pipe and funneling the clog back up for removal. The downside of this method is that snakes are relatively expensive and, if they aren’t used properly, can actually do permanent damage to your drain pipe.

4. Use boiling water to help dissolve the clog.

This tip should only be used when you’re reasonably sure the clog isn’t made of hair – for example, if all the shower users have short hair – and the weather is temperate. The hot water will dissolve soap, oils, and fats found in some bath products that can form clogs once they cool in the pipes. Be cautious, however: pouring even a cup of boiling water down a drain in icy temperatures could damage your pipes and lead to leaks.

5. Call a West Hills plumber to inspect your shower drain.

While you might be tempted to pour a bunch of caustic chemicals down your drain in frustration, in reality this seldom works, can often make the problem worse, and may even create deadly, noxious fumes if the wrong chemicals are mixed. Rely on professionals like Green’s Plumbing to fix your issue in a safe, sustainable way so you can get back to enjoying your shower – not dreading it.
